Dedication plus a dash of philanthropy adds up to an increasingly desired high life for reality star, serial entrepreneur and investor, Kelly Mi Li.

This month, we catch up with the cast member and executive producer of Bling Empire, a Netflix reality series following wealthy Asian American socialites in Los Angeles, to learn about her recipe for success, passion projects, and evolving sense of self.

At only 36-years-old, one day Li’s launching a private club according to Refinery29; the next day she’s taking forward her new production company, Wet Paws Media, becoming an influential link to make work in new settings. Cheers to balance, life, and opportunity.

Isis Nicole: What's been the best part about joining the Bling Empire?

Kelly Mi Li: The best part about being in Bling Empire is having the opportunity to share our stories while simultaneously showcasing Asian culture to a global audience. I love how this is helping amplify Asian voices and provide entertainment and laughter to people.

IN: How did you transition into television coming from the talent management side? Can you share where to start and what it takes for someone interested in getting into the industry?

KL: The transition into producing came naturally for me, as I was already surrounded by so many talented and hardworking friends and colleagues in the industry. My advice for getting started in the industry is to have a positive mindset and always be ready to learn and put in the hard work. From there, perseverance, working smart, and being mindful of your goals will help you grow in your career.

IN: Do you feel a responsibility to be a role model?

KL: When I was growing up, I didn’t see many Asian people in the mass media to look up to. Now having been on screen in front of a global audience, I do have a sense of responsibility to be that role model I always needed. I’ve learned that society’s high expectations can push people to create a facade of being the “perfect” role model. However, there’s no such thing as perfection and role models aren’t perfect–they’re human. At the end of the day, I just want to be as honest and true to myself as possible in hopes of having a positive impact on others.

IN: What kind of content do you want to continue to create to help speak to Asian and/or Asian American heritage?

KL: I’d love to continue creating content that breaks barriers and shatters stereotypes. It’s so important to have content that is authentic and showcases the authentic voices of our community. Doing so helps educate and respectfully share our culture with the world.

IN: How do you keep cool when things get out of control?

KL: I focus on what I can control like my reactions and emotions. Journaling, meditating, or going for a walk helps me clear my mind. Sometimes taking a step back and separating yourself from the situation can help you process it better.

IN: If you could change one thing about mental health awareness, what would it be?

KL: I would change how it's perceived and the stigma surrounding it. This change would hopefully make mental health resources more accessible and encouraged in our community, increasing mental health awareness for all.

IN: What's the hardest and most fulfilling part of finding your voice?

KL: The hardest part is taking that first step to find who you are. It can be hard being honest with yourself at first. I have even found myself sugar coating my own thoughts, but overcoming this challenge is only the first step to so much more. The most fulfilling part is the moment you start seeing everything fall into place, leading up to the moment when your voice emerges naturally as if it was with you all along.

IN: Who has been the most powerful influence in your life?

KL: This might sound funny, but I would have to say it’s myself. Yes, it might be silly, but at the end of the day, I’ve learned that I have the most control and influence in my own life. My decisions, feelings, and aspirations impact the direction of my life most. Realizing this has not only empowered me but helped me love myself more each day.

IN: What do you hope to accomplish for next year?

KL: Next year, I hope to continue focusing on passion projects that speak true to my heart and align with important issues like mental health and diversity. My goal is to be the best version of myself and make a positive impact on my community and those around me.
